The Maintenance
Finder.

One number changes everything: the calories your weight balances at. Everything in nutrition - every cut, every build - is measured from here.

What it does

Estimates your BMR and total daily energy expenditure, then your true maintenance including your daily steps.

Why it matters

Until you know maintenance, every diet is a guess. Know it, and 'how much should I eat?' finally has an answer measured from something real.

When to use it

The very first step of any plan - or as a quick sense-check whenever life, training or activity changes.

The common mistakes

Confusing a smartwatch's burn estimate with reality. Forgetting NEAT quietly collapses when dieting. Testing maintenance for three days and calling it proven - it needs two full weeks of averages.

The Hallmark approach

Maintenance is found, not calculated. The formula gives the starting line; then we eat there, weigh daily, average weekly, and let your own data confirm or correct it. That two-week test is worth more than any calculator - this one just makes sure you start close.

Your estimated maintenance
0 kcal / day
BMR - what you burn at rest-
+ Training activity-
+ Daily steps (NEAT)-
What this number means: eat here and your weight holds steady. Eat 300-500 under it to lose fat at a sustainable rate; 200-300 over it to build. Ready for the full split? Take these numbers straight into the Macro Calculator below.
A starting point, not the full picture
These numbers come from proven formulas - but formulas can't see your training history, stress, sleep, hormones or how your body actually responds. Real precision comes from tracking your own weekly data and adjusting. That individualisation is exactly what coaching does.
A number, not the whole picture

Treat this as an evidence-based starting point, not a prescription. No formula can see the things that genuinely shift your real requirements - sleep quality, stress, hormones (thyroid, cortisol, the menstrual cycle), medication, recovery, how much you move outside training, how accurately you track, and the way your metabolism adapts as your body changes. Two people with identical stats can respond very differently. That gap between the estimate and your reality is exactly what coaching closes - your day-to-day data, reviewed weekly by a human, with targets adjusted from how your body is actually responding rather than what a formula predicted. That’s the HALLMARK standard →

Understand the method
Short answers to the questions that actually matter - the same things I explain to clients.
What actually is TDEE?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure - everything you burn in a day. Your BMR (just being alive) is the biggest slice, then daily movement outside the gym (NEAT), then training, then the small cost of digesting food. Most people are shocked that training is the smallest controllable slice - which is why steps matter so much.
Why do my steps change the number so much?
NEAT - non-exercise activity - can swing hundreds of calories a day between an office worker and someone on their feet. It's also the first thing to silently drop when you diet, which is why 'my metabolism is broken' is usually 'my steps halved'. Tracking them keeps the estimate honest.
How accurate is this?
Within roughly 10% for most people - good enough to start, not gospel. The real test: eat at this number for two weeks, weigh daily, average weekly. Weight steady? That's your true maintenance. Drifting? Adjust by 100-150 and re-test. That feedback loop is the entire art.
